Sins of a Solar Empire is a science-fiction RTS game released in 2008. To this day, the game is still praised for its amazing gameplay. It was developed by Ironclad Games and published by Stardock Entertainment.
The amazing gameplay
Sins of a Solar Empire is a space-bound Real-Time Strategy in which you can choose to control one of three races:
- the industrial TEC
- the psychic Advent
- the alien Vasari
The map is a 3D web of planets and other celestial bodies in a plane of one or more stars. The game also features a sandbox mode, which allows you to choose different types of solar systems.
You can conquer neighboring planets and explore star systems distanced light years away. There is no single-player campaign mode. However, games can be played against AI in offline mode.
In Sins of a Solar Empire, you have three main resources you have to gather:
Credits are the universal currency used by the three races in the game, and are gained through mission completion, the collection of bounties or by the creation of trade network and taxing. Metal is the most common resource, and you can gather it by building extractors on asteroids. You then use Metal to construct ships and structures. Crystal is the rarest of the three resources, which can be mined from asteroids too.
There are also more intangible resources like Supply Points and Capital Ship Crews. However, supply Points are used up when you purchase a ship and acts as a population cap for your fleet. Both of these resources are required for the construction of powerful capital ships.
The Entrenchment expansion added new defensive options. Defensive platforms and strike craft hangars gain special abilities, and all races then have the ability to deploy space mines. In addition, the most notable aspect of the expansion is the addition of starbases. Starbase is a defensive structure with significant firepower and various special abilities.
All in all Sins of a Solar Empire is a masterpiece of Space Strategy!
