Starcraft 2 is One of the Best RTS games

It’s no wonder that Starcraft 2 is as successful as it is, as both story-driven RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game and as one of the longest standing eSport games of all time.

Evolution of the Starcraft Franchise

The first game in the Starcraft franchise was released on March 31st, 1998. It was one of the first RTS games ever that was balanced enough to become a highly competitive game. It is one of the most influential PC eSports titles of all time. Arguably, the home of the first Starcraft game is South Korea, where it was most popular at the time. It even became a part of the country’s pop culture. It seemed like everyone and their mothers played the game in South Korea.

After Wings of Liberty, which was released on July 27th, 2010, another two expansion packs were added to the franchise. Heart of the Swarm in 2013, and Legacy of the Void in 2015. However, Legacy of the Void is a standalone expansion pack and does not require previous games to be played. The games added more depth and story to Zerg and Protoss races respectively.

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty alone has sold more than six million copies, making it the most popular online competitive RTS game of all time. In addition, as of November 3rd, 2017, Starcraft’s multiplayer mode is free-to-play. However, if you want to play through the campaign and experience the story of each game, you still need to buy each expansion pack.

Starcraft Lives on

Even though the time of RTS games has come to an end, Blizzard Entertainment’s masterpiece of a game is still the most popular competitive RTS game in the world. There’s absolutely no doubt that Starcraft will continue to dominate the scene, seeing as there is no other RTS game that even stands a chance against Starcraft’s complexity and ladder system. Now lets all hope that Real Time Strategy games will make a surprise return sometime in the future, with a future Blizzard Entertainment’s game leading the way.
